Wish list medical equipment
It's allmost impossible to estimate the costs of such a diverse list of requests and demands. Considering our experience in Moldova, we feel it's not wise to just follow the list and provide the equipment. We see a rather random list with no structure or policy to back it up. The hospitals have not considered the technical status of their organizations, nor the ability to actually use the equipment.
A majority of the wanted equipment either isn't available anymore or, due to rapid technological development, out-dated or improved.
Let us give you a tiny example of the current technical status. During our visit of the laboratory, we discovered a modern but non-functional (according to the local employee) microscope. After a short inspection, the problem was identified and solved! This emphasizes our impression that the knowledge to use equipment is there but the hospitals lack the technical knowledge of maintenance and repair. In our view, the example illustrates what will happen when you just deliver the equipment and nothing more.
If the hospitals would like to utilize modern equipment, the basic facilities have to be in order on the following departments:
- First Aid
- Intensive Care
- Surgery
Basic facilities are:
- medical gasses systems(oxygen, compressed air, vacuum and nitrous oxide)
- electrical facilities with No-Break
- sanitary facilities
For adequate care the following equipment is needed:
First Aid
- ventilation equipment
- monitors
- defibrillator
- ECG-equipment
- medical gasses systems(oxygen, compressed air, vacuum)
- electrical outlets
- X-ray equipment
Intensive Care
- monitors
- ventilation equipment
- defibrillator
- medical gasses systems(oxygen, compressed air, vacuum)
- electrical outlets
- X-ray equipment
Surgery
- monitors
- anesthetic equipment
- defibrillator
- medical gasses systems(oxygen, compressed air, vacuum and nitrous oxide)
- electrical outlets
- X-ray equipment
Recommendation
Start with installing a medical gasses facility (oxygen/compressed air), each department needs this basic facility to function properly.
The electrical installation has to be tested. What happens when electricity falls out? Is there a No-Break supply unit? Does it work?
Only after realization of functioning basic facilities, we would advice to buy the requested equipment from the wish list. It's our belief that this would be a better strategy for the medical development of the concerned hospitals in Moldova than just purchasing and installing all wanted equipment.
We have made a cost estimate for installation of the basic facilities as stated above.
