Recommendation report medical/technical charity aid Moldova
Children's Hospital II: Spitalul Clinic Municipal Pentru Copii nr 2 E. Cotaga
Director: Dr. Gheorghe Grosu
Address: Str. Vasile Alexandri 2, Chisinau MD-2009
The Hospital exists for 50 years now and has always been a Children's Hospital. It had its ups and downs. It started off with 560 beds but was forced to cut beds 18 years ago. There are 235 beds left.
The Hospital consists of 6 medical departments:
- ophthalmologic micro surgery (only one in the country)
- facial plastic surgery
- burn unit
- ENT (including audiology)
- growth disorders
- hepatology, endocrinology (incl. diabetes) in cooperation with the Mother and Child Hospital
There are 70 physicians and 200 nurses on Hospital staff. Some technical support is provided but lacks modern training. The engineers, who used to work here, have all departed to other countries. There is still an medical/technical engineer left, but he is deprived of financial means, equipment and materials.
All maintenance on medical equipment is done by external firms. A lot of faulted equipment is sent to the manufacturers for reparation and this means high costs for the Hospital.
The laboratory has a variety of western equipment at its disposal, all donated by Japan. The value of the donated equipment is a million euro (they also donated 2 million euro worth of equipment to the Mother and Child Hospital). All equipment is 5 years old now and no maintenance has ever been done up to this point. The Hospital likes to keep working at the current level but finds it hard to keep things going.
They'd also like to be provided with osteosynthesis materials for maxillomandibulary surgery.
Burn Unit
Children from all over the country are treated at the Burn Unit. The Unit has a minimum of equipment at its disposal. The dermatome, used for skin transplantation, is in a very, very poor state. There is no equipment for ventilation, microsurgery and even sterilization. Each year, approximately 5,000 operations are being done, including 1,200 eye operations. Like all equipment, the anesthesia installation is at least 25 years of age.
The Burn Unit is comprised of 2 treatment rooms with 6 beds each. The patients stay at the ICU for at least 20 days, before they are transferred to the ward.
Intensive Care Unit
The Hospital has one ICU for babies and one ICU for children who suffer from weight loss. Each ICU has its own oxygen supply installation. Unfortunately, neither of which works so little oxygen bottles are being used. There's no compressed air installation.
The operating center looks very modern. It comprises of 4 operating rooms. The center has recently been renovated.
