The University Hospital St. Michael was established in 1950. It has a capacity of 255 beds and there are 60 physicians, 200 nurses and facilitary employees. The Hospital has a good reputation and is located in the center of the city of Chisinau.
The Hospital is comprised of the following departments:
- surgery (no neurosurgery)
- gynecology
- gastro-enterology
- lung diseases
- cardiology
- ophthalmology
- resuscitation
In total, there are 6 operating rooms. Additionally, there is a clinical, a bacteriological and an immunological laboratory. Each year, the hospital treats 11,000 patients, often the more severe cases. There is a Intensive Care with 28 beds and a recovery room.
All technical installations are of poor quality. There is a great lack of (relatively) modern medical equipment. This used to be a government hospital and thereby excluded from western influences. The current equipment is at least 20 years old. The Hospital depends heavily on the dedication and effort of all hospital staff to keep the hospital going.
The medical gasses system is out of order. Instead, separate gas bottles are being used. The sterilization department is running behind in development. The wards are substantially aged as well. The operation center is problematic and lacks all kinds of things.
The hospital has set the following priorities:
- respiratory equipment
- guarding monitors
- blood analysis equipment
