Eurobiker's benefit charity tour for the Children's Hospital Sibiu, Romania

Preface

Eurobiker LogoIn January 2005, the Urgenta Foundation was contacted by the German Eurobiker Association to inquire about possible financial or material ways of supporting the Children's Hospital in the city of Sibiu, Romania. The Eurobiker Association consists of a group of motor enthusiasts, which organizes a charity tour each year. Usually, these tours are for the benefit of child related matters in Eastern Europe like child homes, orphanages, healthcare, education etc.

This year, a tour has been planned across Hungary, Romania, Slovenia and Poland. This tour's causes are the (German) Rumänien Soforthilfe e.V. Foundation and the Children's Hospital Sibiu. The Rumänien Soforthilfe Foundation, headed by the vice president of the German parliament, runs a couple of orphanages and child homes in Romania

We immediately contacted the Children's Hospital and, after some deliberation, two projects came out. Both projects have been priorities for some time now. The hospital's first priority is to realize an ophthalmology outpatient's clinic. Second on the list is the construction of an orthopedic outpatient's clinic.

Ophthalmology outpatient's clinic

For this project, a complete reconstruction of two patient's wards is needed. The reconstruction will be carried out by the Children's Hospital. Help is needed for the acquisition of all basic medical equipment and instruments. A lot of money is involved if this equipment has to be purchased off the shelf. Therefore, the Eurobiker Association is currently collecting as much equipment as they possibly can.

The following equipment is needed:

  • trial lenses set (phoropter)
  • indirect binocular ophtalmoscope (heine/allyn wellch+20D volk lens)
  • retinoscope (allyn-wellch)
  • automated refractometer (carl zeiss, nidek)
  • barens prism bar - horizontal and vertical
  • stereotests (lang, whirt)
  • maddox rod
  • automated perimeter (humphrey, topcon)
  • a-scan and b-scan ultrasonograph (carl zeiss, alcon)
  • bowmann probe #000, #00, #0
  • punctal dilatators
  • operating microscope (carl zeiss, leica, topcon)
  • phacoemulsification device (legacy, nidek, universal)

The value of this equipment has been estimated at 150,000-200,000 euros (approx. 200,000-270,000 USD). If you are willing to support this project through donation of equipment or money, please don't hesitate to contact us. You can also send an e-mail to dr. Hermann Munzel. He's the Eurobiker in charge of the collection of medical equipment.

The Children's Hospital will take care of the conversion of the wardrooms into an eye surgery facility. We will provide and install the medical gasses systems and offer our assistance as much as we can.

Orthopedic outpatient's clinic

Like in the case of the ophthalmology outpatient's clinic, a few rooms have to be converted into an orthopedic outpatient's clinic as well as medical equipment is needed.

Unfortunately, the list of needed equipment is only available in German. If anybody knows good translations, please contact us. The following list has been formulated:

  • schnellspannfutter
  • schüsselbohrfutter
  • aufnahme für Kirschner-Drähte
  • adaptoren für Fräse (mill adapters)
  • koppelapdaptoren für Sägesystem

The Urgenta Foundation will take care of the medical gasses systems (compressed air and oxygen)

From March the 24th onwards, a technicians team of Urgenta will be in the city of Sibiu to carry out the development projects of April 2005. We intend to have several meetings with the Children's Hospital's board to draw up a plan of action concerning these projects. Time is limited though; the bikers will arrive on May the 23rd.

A lot of things are involved in turning these projects into a success. Most important is whether the Eurobikers can collect enough equipment. Therefore, any help is welcome! If you can provide us with any of the listed equipment, please contact us. Together we can carry out these projects.
