Project Reorganization Oxygen Facilities University Hospital Sibiu
Introduction:
The hospital has widespread oxygen facilities which are being fed through an on the grounds situated oxygen tank. This oxygen facility, which runs through almost all buildings displays rather a lot of leakages. A first quick check by the Urgenta Foundation, shows a great lack of maintenance. Many dividers prove oxygen leakages audible. On a first rough estimate this could be a loss of 25%. Each year €48,180 ($60,225) is used on oxygen. This would result in saving €12,045 ($15,056)! The Urgenta Foundation reckons the loss could be distinctly larger than initially estimated. The piping is constantly frozen; this indicates a higher quantity of oxygen. According to the doctors of the hospital, only little oxygen is given to the patients through the main network. Which means a great loss due to leakages, and according to the Urgenta Foundation, a waste of pipelines in the hospital.
Project:
A full check-up of the entire pipeline network. Switch off redundant pipelines and repair leakages. Leakages mainly occur at dividers in the hospital and at outlets. The Urgenta Foundation will make new prefab dividers in Holland. These will, in cooperation with the hospital's Technical Services, be exchanged with the dividers that show leakages. After having done all this, a large amount will be saved in using liquid oxygen.
Realization:
April 2005
Current situation:
December 2003
In December 2003 the Urgenta Foundation has made multiple visits to the University Hospital. An inventory has been made of all dividers from the oxygen network. The Urgenta Foundation thinks the savings could well be much higher than initially estimated. Leakages are more abundant than first reckoned with. New calculations prove savings could lead up to €24,000 ($30,000) a year. Volunteers in Holland will make 12 dividers.
April 2004
This project should have been finished in April 2004 but during our visit it became clear that nothing was prepared by the Technical Services. The decision was made to postpone the start of this project to December 2004. Estimates are that project will be finished in April 2005.
Costs:
€7,500.- (approx. $9,375)

Project Replacement Interior Main Kitchen University Hospital Sibiu
Introduction:
The current interior of the main kitchen in the University Hospital of Sibiu is, technically spoken, completely out of date. Unfortunately, there are (still) insufficient funds to realize this project.
Project:
Installation of an entire industrial, modern interior in about a week's time, whilst the kitchen is in full service. This will be a challenge to accomplish.
Realization:
Spring 2005
Current situation:
December 2004
As of 1 November 2003 the main kitchen services and laundrette have been privatized. The Board figured this was the best way to get these kinds of facilitairy services up to a higher standard. We think this a good line of policy. This means the kitchen staff is responsible for their own actions. As a result of this, they have already begun renovating and painting the main kitchen as we have seen during our visit in December 2003. The food is still not what it is supposed to be, and the emphasis will be placed on it in due time. Modern equipment will certainly make life easier and the quality of the meals will benefit as well.
September 2004
The University Medical Center Utrecht (Netherlands) replaced its main kitchen interior in the fall of 2004 and donated its old equipment to the Urgenta Foundation. In the passed weeks the Foundation has dismantled 2 cooking isles including all kinds of equipment like boilers, stoves, roasters, workbenches etc.
The University Hospital Sibiu was glad to receive all this equipment and took care of transportation in september 2004. This coming winter the equipment will be installed in the main kitchen of the hospital. Estimated value of this donation: €8.550 (approx. $10,690.-).
December 2004
Unfortunately there has been a break-in in the storage depot of the Urgenta Foundation and all the kitchen equipment has been stolen. This project is postponed till further notice.
